Robotic Surgery

One of our obstetrician-gynecologists, Dr. Holly Hickman, specializes in robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery. Robotic assisted surgery may be particularly beneficial for complex cases or patients with extensive surgical history.

We use the daVinci® Surgical System, an FDA-approved system. The da Vinci surgical systems are designed to help surgeons perform minimally invasive surgery. Da Vinci systems offer surgeons high-definition 3D vision, a magnified view, and robotic and computer assistance. They use specialized instrumentation, including a miniaturized surgical camera and wristed instruments (i.e., scissors, scalpels and forceps) that are designed to help with precise dissection deep inside the body.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Robotic-assisted surgery is a form of minimally invasive surgery, performed through a few small incisions.

Surgeon’s Console

During robotic-assisted surgery, your surgeon controls the daVinci surgical system through a special console in the operating room.

Advanced Surgical Technology

The daVinci’s vision capabilities give your surgeon a highly magnified, crystal-clear, 3D view while operating, so he or she can see the fine details of your surgery.

Complex Gynecological Surgeries

With robotic-assisted surgery, we perform some of the following types of cases:

Large uteruses, fibroids, complex cysts like dermoids, and extensive scar tissue are cases in which the robot is particularly helpful.

Our Experience

Dr. Holly Hickman logged over 200 robotic cases as a resident at the University of Louisville. She trained extensively with Dr. Daniel Metzinger, a gynecological oncologist, who has performed thousands of robotic surgeries. She began operating at Vail Hospital in the summer of 2021 shortly after they started their robotic program.
