Goals of Obstetrical Services

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, women who have early and regular prenatal care are more likely to have healthy infants. Our approach to antepartum care is patient-centered and involves ongoing medical care, continuous risk assessment, and support. We encourage our patients to make well-informed decisions during pregnancy, labor, delivery, and the postpartum period.

At Swan Mountain Women’s & Family Clinic, you can be at ease during your appointment with us. We provide compassionate and informed care for all women. We understand that labor and delivery is one of the most important events in a woman’s life. We respect all patients’ desires to achieve the labor experience they wish with the benefit of our experience. All birth plans are honored, and we will assist you in developing a plan that meets your needs.

Our model of care is based on the concept that pregnancy and birth are normal life events. We are committed to offering you choices in your birthing experience while maintaining the health of you and your baby. We deliver exclusively at St. Anthony Summit Medical Center’s Birth Center in Frisco, CO.

Prenatal Care

Genetic Testing

We provide safe, noninvasive and highly accurate screening tests for you and your baby. These tests screen for a number of chromosomal disorders, such as Down syndrome (extra chromosome 21), as well as fetal sex. Another group of tests will screen you as a carrier of different autosomal recessive diseases. As a result, invasive, diagnostic tests such as amniocentesis or CVS, which have risks, are rarely needed.

Cell Free DNA

Technology allows us to test your baby’s chromosomes by doing a simple test of your blood. These tests can be done anytime after 10 weeks and screen for Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), Trisomy 18, and Trisomy 13, as well as sex chromosomal disorders.

Spina Bifida Screening

We offer a blood test to screen for spina bifida and open abdominal wall defects, some of the most common birth defects. This test is MSAFP (maternal serum alfa fetal protein), which is done ideally between 16 and 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Genetic Carrier Screening

There are thousands of genes on our chromosomes, and many of us are carriers of a specific gene defect without being aware of it. When your partner carries the same recessive gene, your child has a 25% chance of receiving both genes and getting the disease. Examples of these types of recessive genetic diseases, which affect one in 400 births, include cystic fibrosis. A genetic carrier blood test can be done at anytime, pre-conceptually or during pregnancy. There are basic tests recommended for everyone and more expanded tests which may be recommended depending on your particular history.

High Risk Pregnancy Care

All of our board-certified OB-GYNs trained at high volume academic centers and are experienced with high and low-risk obstetrics. These are just a few of the common high risk complications we care about:
We also work closely with Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists from the University of Colorado who regularly attend to patients in Frisco, CO.

Ultrasounds & Fetal Development

Ultrasound creates pictures of the internal organs of the body from sound waves. During pregnancy, ultrasounds are used to examine the fetus. Swan Mountain has two of the latest and most up-to-date GE Ultrasound machines. During a normal pregnancy, we will typically perform a transvaginal ultrasound to confirm your due date at your initial prenatal visit.

During the middle of the pregnancy around 20 weeks, we fully assess all of the baby’s anatomy and the growth with a fetal anatomy survey. Other ultrasounds will typically only be covered by insurance if there is a fetal or maternal indication. We are proud to offer this service and the convenience of its location to our patients.

Labor and Delivery

During the third trimester, your body starts to prepare for your baby’s birth. Your cervix starts to soften and thin (efface) and also may begin to dilate. The mucous plug that blocked the cervix during pregnancy may fall out. This doesn’t mean you are in labor. Labor could happen days or weeks after this event. You may see scant streaks of blood, especially after cervical exams in the office.

If you experience signs of labor, call us and go to labor and delivery. These are common signs of labor:
